# Thai casinos could boost tourism spending by 52 percent

Average spending by Thai tourists could rise 52% to 65,050 THB ($1,785) per trip, Bloomberg reported, citing research on casino legalization by Thai lawmakers, which is expected to be submitted to the Thai parliament on Thursday (March 28).

There were separate reports that actual legislation on casino legalization would be submitted to the House of Representatives.

The research article from Bloomberg did not specify whether it combined data referring to foreign and domestic tourists. So far, no indication has been found that local people could be banned from visiting casinos.

The report said China's annual tourism revenue could rise by the equivalent of $12 billion. Bloomberg quoted the study as saying that the additional revenue could boost China's GDP growth by 1.16 percentage points. Thailand's labor minister, Pippat Ratchakit Prakhan, cited recently by the Bangkok Post newspaper, suggested that Thailand could create at least 50,000 jobs if it agreed to build five casino resorts in separate regions.

Nevertheless, the minister said employment and income checks were needed to ensure domestic customers of Thai casinos could gamble.

Bloomberg noted that a panel of lawmakers reviewing casino issues led by Deputy Treasury Secretary Julapun Amorbibat recommended a number of safeguards to prevent Thais from becoming addicted to betting.

The mayor of Pattaya, a popular beach resort southeast of the capital Bangkok, wants to host a casino complex, Pattaya news outlet said in other comments on the subject on Tuesday.

Poramase Ngampiches mentioned the possibility of creating such a place in Jomtien, near Pattaya.

The Royal Thai Police reportedly said the casino complex should only be built far from the community and educational institutions.
